WiiM Ultra
It combines app-based streaming with HDMI ARC, phono and line inputs, subwoofer management, room correction and a useful touchscreen at a sensible Australian price.
A music streamer adds app-controlled streaming, internet radio, local-library playback and often multi-room audio to an existing hi-fi system. The best choice is not automatically the most expensive: it is the one that supports your services, phone ecosystem, amplifier connections and preferred control method.
Our shortlist covers three distinct buyers. The WiiM Ultra is the strongest all-rounder, the WiiM Pro Plus is the compact value choice, and the Bluesound NODE ICON is the premium option for systems that can use its balanced outputs, larger display and dedicated headphone stage.
The short answer
Choose the WiiM Ultra for the best overall combination of value, connectivity and system control. It can bring music, television sound, a turntable and a powered subwoofer together in one compact component.
Choose the WiiM Pro Plus when you want affordable streaming and AirPlay 2 without paying for a screen, HDMI ARC or phono input.
Choose the Bluesound NODE ICON when its balanced XLR outputs, BluOS ecosystem, large display or premium headphone section solve a genuine need.
Before buying
Confirm the exact streaming services and control protocols used by your household. The WiiM Ultra does not support AirPlay 2, while the WiiM Pro Plus and Bluesound NODE ICON do. All three require an amplifier or powered speakers to drive a speaker system.

How we chose the music streamers
Our selection focuses on Australian pricing, published specifications, streaming-service support, analogue and digital connections, television and subwoofer integration, multi-room capability, and whether the premium model offers features a suitable system can actually use.
We did not rank products by maximum sample rate alone. Control methods, service support, connection compatibility and everyday usability are more useful buying criteria than an impressive number on a specification sheet.
1. WiiM Ultra
The strongest balance of streaming, connections and system control.
The WiiM Ultra can feed an amplifier through its analogue output, act as a digital transport into an existing DAC, receive television sound through HDMI ARC and manage a powered subwoofer. Its moving-magnet phono input, line input and optical input also let it become the control hub of a compact system.
Its 3.5-inch touchscreen and physical volume control allow useful operation without a phone. The WiiM Home app handles service browsing, input selection, multi-room grouping, EQ and room correction. Supported playback reaches 24-bit/192kHz, with Wi-Fi 6E and Ethernet networking.
The main limitation is AirPlay 2: the Ultra does not support it. Apple households that depend on system-wide AirPlay should choose another model.
What we like
- Extensive connectivity for the price.
- HDMI ARC for television integration.
- Phono, line and optical inputs.
- Room correction and subwoofer controls.
- App, touchscreen and physical volume control.
What to consider
- No AirPlay 2.
- Small screen at normal room distance.
- Room correction needs careful measurement.
- Digital-only users will not use all its circuitry.
Best for: anyone wanting one capable streamer to connect music, television, a turntable and a subwoofer to an existing amplifier or powered speakers.
2. WiiM Pro Plus
Affordable streaming and AirPlay 2 for a conventional stereo system.
The WiiM Pro Plus is the smarter choice when you do not need the Ultra's touchscreen, HDMI ARC, phono stage or dedicated headphone and subwoofer outputs. It connects to an amplifier through RCA or feeds an external DAC through optical or coaxial output.
AirPlay 2, Google Cast, Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect, Alexa Cast, Bluetooth and the WiiM Home app provide several ways to start playback. Analogue and optical inputs allow compatible outside sources to join the system.
Its strengths are compact size, capable analogue output and broad control support. Buyers wanting HDMI television integration or dedicated subwoofer management should consider the Ultra, provided they do not need AirPlay 2.
What we like
- Lower price and compact design.
- AirPlay 2 and Google Cast.
- Analogue output for conventional amplifiers.
- Optical and coaxial digital outputs.
- WiiM Home app and compatible multi-room playback.
What to consider
- No touchscreen or HDMI ARC.
- No phono or headphone connection.
- No dedicated subwoofer output.
- Fewer system-control features than the Ultra.
Best for: existing stereo systems that need network streaming, AirPlay 2 and an analogue output without the Ultra's additional hardware.
3. Bluesound NODE ICON
Premium streaming for systems that can use balanced outputs and BluOS.
The NODE ICON's aluminium chassis, five-inch display and balanced XLR outputs suit premium integrated amplifiers, power amplifiers and active speakers. Its dual-mono DAC architecture targets low noise and strong channel separation, while its THX AAA headphone stage is a major reason to consider it for headphone listening.
BluOS combines supported streaming services, local libraries, internet radio and compatible multi-room products. AirPlay 2 supports Apple households, while HDMI eARC provides a convenient television connection.
It is Dirac Live Ready, but buyers should confirm licence and measurement-hardware requirements. The price is harder to justify if it will only feed a separate DAC digitally.
What we like
- Balanced XLR and digital output options.
- Large five-inch display.
- Dedicated THX AAA headphone amplification.
- BluOS multi-room ecosystem.
- AirPlay 2 and HDMI eARC.
What to consider
- Far more expensive than either WiiM.
- No dedicated phono input.
- Premium DAC hardware is bypassed with digital output.
- Dirac use may add cost and setup requirements.
Best for: owners of systems that need balanced analogue outputs, dedicated headphone listening, AirPlay 2 or a BluOS multi-room platform.
Why these three made the shortlist
These products represent three clear buying paths rather than minor variations. The WiiM Ultra covers the broadest range of system-control features at its reference price, the WiiM Pro Plus removes hardware many traditional stereo owners do not need while adding AirPlay 2, and the NODE ICON provides premium features in balanced output, display, headphone hardware and BluOS integration.
Choose the connection before the streamer
- Integrated amplifier with RCA inputs: use the streamer's analogue output and normally let the amplifier control volume.
- Amplifier or DAC with optical or coaxial input: use a digital output and let the receiving component perform conversion.
- Power amplifier or powered speakers: use variable output only after configuring a safe maximum volume.
- Television plus stereo: use HDMI ARC with the WiiM Ultra or HDMI eARC with the NODE ICON.
- Balanced amplifier or active speakers: the NODE ICON's XLR output is the relevant premium feature.
Internal DAC or digital transport?
Using RCA or XLR outputs means the streamer performs digital-to-analogue conversion. Optical, coaxial or a supported USB digital output sends audio to another DAC. An external DAC is not automatically better, and using the internal conversion can simplify system setup.
Check which volume, EQ, room-correction and subwoofer features operate through your chosen output. Processing and supported formats can vary between connections.
If your amplifier already contains a suitable DAC and you need only basic streaming, a cheaper transport may deliver the same practical result. Spending more than AU$2,000 on the NODE ICON solely to bypass its analogue hardware leaves much of its premium design unused.
AirPlay, Google Cast and connect-style playback
AirPlay 2 is convenient for Apple devices; the WiiM Pro Plus and NODE ICON support it, while the WiiM Ultra does not. Google Cast is supported by both WiiM models. Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and similar systems let the service app control playback while the streamer retrieves the audio directly.
Choose according to the phones and apps already used in your household. A missing control protocol can be more frustrating than a small theoretical difference in DAC performance.
Television, room correction and subwoofers
The WiiM Ultra and NODE ICON can receive television audio through HDMI and may allow the television remote to control volume. Compatibility still depends on the television's audio format, HDMI control and lip-sync behaviour.
The WiiM Ultra offers app-based room correction, parametric EQ and a dedicated subwoofer output with crossover controls. The WiiM Pro Plus offers EQ and supported WiiM room-correction features but has no dedicated subwoofer connection. The NODE ICON is Dirac Live Ready and includes a subwoofer output.
Speaker placement should come before aggressive correction. Check microphone compatibility, licence requirements and whether the processing works through the inputs and outputs you intend to use.
Safe volume setup
A streamer connected directly to a power amplifier or active speakers can create a dangerous volume jump if its output changes from variable to fixed. Configure maximum-volume protection where available, begin at minimum level and confirm the output mode before playing music.
What to check before buying
- Streaming services: confirm the exact Australian service, subscription tier and supported resolution.
- Control method: check AirPlay 2, Google Cast and connect-style support.

- Volume control: decide which device will act as the master control.
- Network: use Ethernet when practical and confirm reliable Wi-Fi at the hi-fi rack.
- Room correction: confirm phone, microphone, licence and output compatibility.
- Australian listing: check the final seller, warranty, delivery and checkout price before ordering.
Frequently asked questions
Will a music streamer improve sound quality?
It can provide a clean digital source, DAC, EQ or better volume control, but improvement is not guaranteed. Speakers, room acoustics and mastering usually have greater influence.
Can these streamers connect directly to powered speakers?
Yes, when the speakers accept a compatible analogue or digital input. Use variable volume where needed, set a safe maximum and confirm that the connection retains the processing you want.
Do I need a separate DAC?
Usually not. All three contain DACs and analogue outputs. Add an external model only for a specific connection, feature or demonstrated improvement.
Does the WiiM Ultra support AirPlay 2?
No. Anyone requiring system-wide AirPlay should consider the WiiM Pro Plus or Bluesound NODE ICON instead.
Which model is best for headphones?
The NODE ICON is our dedicated headphone choice in this shortlist because of its THX AAA stage and two headphone outputs. The WiiM Ultra provides a headphone connection, while the Pro Plus has none.
Our verdict
The WiiM Ultra is our recommendation for most Australians. It offers the strongest balance of price, connectivity, television integration and system control in this shortlist.
Choose the WiiM Pro Plus when compact value and AirPlay 2 matter more than HDMI, phono input, touchscreen or dedicated subwoofer management.
Choose the Bluesound NODE ICON when its balanced outputs, headphone stage, larger display and BluOS ecosystem solve needs your system genuinely has.
