Our top three travel eSIM picks
Before buying: confirm your exact phone supports eSIM, is unlocked and can use the selected plan. Coverage, validity and hotspot limits matter more than a headline starting price.

Airalo
Start here for broad country, regional and global plan choice. Compare the exact package against your itinerary and data needs before paying.
A travel eSIM can put mobile data on a compatible phone before you leave home. The best option is the package that covers your route, lasts the whole trip and supports the way you use your phone.
Airalo is our overall starting point, Saily suits repeat travel and Nomad is a useful fixed-data comparison. Holafly and Simify are additional options for travellers considering unlimited plans. This is a research-based guide, not a claim that we tested every network overseas.
Compare the options
| Provider | Our suggested use | Main decision | Important compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Airalo | General holidays and multi-country trips | Country, regional or global package | Most plans are data-only |
| Saily | Repeat travel and optional browsing tools | Destination plan versus global coverage | Currency, allowance and validity vary |
| Nomad | Fixed-data comparison and sharing | Data allowance and local network | Add-ons and number inclusions vary |
| Holafly | Heavy handset data | Total trip cost and fair-use conditions | Global plan lists 1GB/day hotspot sharing |
| Simify | AUD shopping and unlimited options | Exact destination package | Top-ups currently unavailable |
How we chose
We prioritised itinerary fit, clear plan conditions, manageable setup and useful differences between services. Provider-wide destination counts do not establish that a particular package covers every stop. Likewise, we have not ranked real-world speed: that requires testing the same devices and networks in the places you will visit.
These are digital services purchased directly from the providers. The images show genuine branding rather than physical SIM cards. We could not verify suitable exact-provider Amazon Australia or eBay Australia listings.
1. Airalo

Our first place to compare a normal holiday or multi-country trip.
Airalo offers local, regional and global packages across more than 200 locations, including fixed allowances and unlimited options. This breadth makes it a useful starting point when you want to match coverage to an itinerary.
Compare the exact destinations, validity and partner networks before choosing. The smallest advertised package is not necessarily a useful holiday allowance, and a global package may include coverage you will never use.
Most Airalo packages provide data rather than ordinary calls or SMS. Internet calling apps can work over the connection. If you need traditional calls, inspect the selected package rather than assuming every Airalo eSIM includes a number.
✓ Reasons to consider it
- Country, regional and global choices.
- Fixed-data and unlimited options.
- One place to compare several itineraries.
– Things to consider
- Many packages are data-only.
- Plan conditions need individual checking.
- Not automatically the cheapest for your trip.
2. Saily

A practical option if you want to add future trips through the same app.
Saily lets you retain an installed eSIM and buy further destination plans. Its global range covers 121 destinations, with allowances from 1GB to 50GB and validity reaching 365 days on selected packages. Country and regional coverage must be checked separately.
Optional ad blocking, web protection and virtual-location features are its main distinction. They can be useful additions, but they do not guarantee safe browsing or replace sensible account security. A virtual-location setting should not be treated as proof that every app on the phone has full VPN protection.
The global page displayed €7.99 for 1GB over seven days when checked. That is a small backup allowance, not a like-for-like rival to an unlimited plan. Check the checkout currency and whether automatic top-ups suit your budget.
✓ Reasons to consider it
- Keep the installed eSIM for later plans.
- Optional browsing protection tools.
- Global allowances up to 50GB.
– Things to consider
- Global coverage is not every Saily destination.
- Foreign-currency checkout may add card costs.
- Small allowances are unsuitable for heavy streaming.
3. Nomad

Worth comparing when you know your destination and approximate data needs.
Nomad advertises plans across more than 200 destinations. It supports hotspot use, and some packages can receive add-ons without replacing the installed eSIM. Availability and inclusions depend on the selected plan.
Our value recommendation is an invitation to compare, not a claim that Nomad wins every price check. Match the allowance, validity and local network against the alternative. A cheaper package is poor value if it expires before the final part of your trip.
Some Nomad eSIMs include a local number, but you should not assume that a number means ordinary calls and SMS are included. Read the package details. For laptop sharing, allow for the combined usage of both devices.
✓ Reasons to consider it
- Useful fixed-data comparison option.
- Hotspot support.
- Add-ons available on some packages.
– Things to consider
- Plan inclusions differ.
- Not every package can be topped up.
- Network coverage still depends on location.
Two more options for heavier data use
Holafly: compare unlimited handset data
Holafly’s global product lists unlimited mobile data with 1GB of hotspot sharing per day. Its published examples include US$24.90 for three days and US$161.50 for 30 days. These are different durations, not directly comparable with a small fixed-data package.
The global plan is data-only, and network fair-use management can temporarily reduce speed. Other destination products can have different sharing conditions. It is worth considering if monitoring a fixed allowance is inconvenient, but a laptop-heavy trip needs closer scrutiny.

Simify: an AUD-priced alternative
Simify offers travel eSIM shopping in Australian dollars, including unlimited options. It lists round-the-clock support. At the time of checking, its FAQ said top-ups were not available; additional service required another purchase.
Its unlimited plans remain subject to fair-use conditions. Compare the exact package’s speed and hotspot terms, as well as the full price for your dates. A low advertised daily rate may apply only to a longer duration than you need.

Compare prices on the same basis
Write down your destination list, trip length, required data and hotspot needs first. Then compare packages that satisfy all four. A one-week 1GB offer and a month of unlimited data answer different questions, even when both appear under “from” pricing.
- Total cost: compare the checkout total, not only cost per day.
- Currency: note whether the quote is AUD, USD or EUR and whether your payment card adds a conversion fee.
- Validity: make sure the final travel day is covered, including stopovers.
- Replacement cost: check whether you can add data or must buy another package.
- Sharing: check any separate hotspot allowance before comparing value per gigabyte.
We have removed the old blanket entry-price comparison because the offers used different currencies, coverage and durations. A precise destination quote is more useful than declaring a permanent cheapest provider.
How much data should you buy?
Use your phone’s recent mobile-data history as a starting point. Look at which apps consumed it, then adjust for the trip: more navigation and photo sharing may increase usage, while hotel Wi-Fi and downloaded entertainment may reduce it.
Our planning guide below is an estimate, not a provider guarantee. Review usage after the first day and leave room for unexpected needs.
| Use pattern | Suggested starting approach |
|---|---|
| Maps, messages and occasional browsing | Consider a small fixed allowance, with a clear top-up or replacement route |
| Daily photo sharing and regular browsing | Compare mid-sized packages for the whole trip; monitor usage |
| Video, cloud backups or laptop sharing | Estimate actual usage carefully; compare larger allowances and hotspot-friendly unlimited plans |
Save data before departure: download maps and entertainment over Wi-Fi, pause mobile photo backups, and disable automatic app updates on mobile data. Keep offline copies of accommodation details and boarding passes.
Country, regional or global?
Country plans are a sensible comparison point for a holiday based in one destination. Regional plans can reduce administration when crossing several borders. Global plans suit trips spanning regions or travellers who value broader backup coverage.
“Global” is a product label, not a promise to cover the world. Check every stop against the package’s country list. Also check whether airport transits require connectivity: you may not need to pay for an extra destination if you will stay airside briefly with offline documents.
Check the exact phone, not just the brand
Confirm eSIM support for your model and regional variant using the manufacturer’s information and the provider’s compatibility checker. A phone family name alone is not enough. The phone must also be unlocked for another provider, and its active-SIM limits must suit your intended setup.
Do this before purchasing. If compatibility is uncertain, a local physical SIM, your existing carrier’s roaming package or a portable hotspot may be more practical. Compare those alternatives against the total cost and inconvenience, rather than assuming an eSIM is always best.
Keep your Australian number without accidental data roaming
On a compatible dual-SIM phone, you can usually keep the Australian line available while assigning mobile data to the travel eSIM. The exact menus differ by device. Follow the provider’s installation instructions and your phone manufacturer’s dual-SIM guidance.
- Install over reliable Wi-Fi, after checking when the plan’s validity starts.
- Label the lines clearly, for example “Australia” and “Travel data”.
- Select the travel eSIM for mobile data when ready to use it.
- Enable roaming on the travel eSIM if its instructions require it.
- Turn off data roaming on the Australian line and disable automatic data switching where available.
- Check which line is selected before making an ordinary call or sending an SMS.
Leaving your home line active can still incur charges for calls, messages or other roaming services. Turning off data roaming does not turn off all roaming. Ask your Australian carrier about receiving banking codes, incoming calls, voicemail and any automatic travel-pass triggers.
Unlimited does not settle the hotspot question
Before buying for work, ask two separate questions: how much data can the phone use, and how much can it share? Then check whether fair-use rules can reduce speed. A plan suitable for phone navigation may be frustrating for video meetings or large laptop downloads.
For important work, have a backup connection and avoid relying on marketing language alone. Record the plan’s stated limits before purchase so you know what you are comparing.
Set up before the airport
- Check the activation deadline and whether validity starts on installation or first connection.
- Save the setup instructions somewhere available offline.
- Keep the purchase receipt and provider support details accessible.
- Set up messaging and authentication apps before changing services.
- Protect installation QR codes and activation details; do not publish them.
- Check top-up settings so automatic purchases match your budget.
If the connection does not work
Check that the plan covers your current location, has started and still has data. Confirm the correct line is enabled and selected for mobile data. Follow the provider’s instructions for roaming, network selection and any APN settings.
Try restarting the phone if instructed. Use trusted Wi-Fi to contact support if the problem remains. Avoid deleting the eSIM as an experiment: reinstallation and transfer rules vary, and deleting it can make recovery harder.
Frequently asked questions
Which travel eSIM should I compare first?
Airalo is our broad-choice starting point. Compare Saily for reusable setup and optional browsing tools, and Nomad for a fixed-data package matching your route. The best purchase can change with destination and duration.
Will WhatsApp keep my Australian number?
Changing the mobile-data connection does not normally require changing your registered WhatsApp number. Keep your existing account and avoid selecting a number-change option unless that is what you intend.
Can a data-only eSIM receive bank SMS codes?
No. Ordinary SMS needs a service that supports it. Your Australian line may remain available on a compatible dual-SIM phone, subject to your carrier’s overseas service and charging rules.
Does every plan include a local phone number?
No. Treat ordinary calls and SMS as excluded unless the package explicitly includes them. Internet calling through apps is different from a local mobile voice service.
Should I buy the largest package just in case?
Only if the extra allowance solves a likely need. A smaller package with a convenient top-up can be better value, but check availability before relying on that strategy.
Is a local SIM better for a long stay?
It can be. Compare local-number access, registration requirements, network coverage and total data cost. A travel eSIM can still be useful for the arrival period while you arrange a longer-term service.
Our verdict
Start with Airalo, then compare the exact trip against Saily and Nomad. Holafly and Simify deserve a look when larger or unlimited allowances fit your usage.
Buy for the route, validity and sharing conditions you need. Confirm compatibility, manage your Australian line carefully and keep essential travel information available offline.
