Three travel insurance policies to compare
Personal quotes required. Compare the same travellers, dates, destinations, cancellation amount, activities and excess. The lowest headline price does not establish which policy fits your trip.

Southern Cross International Comprehensive
A sensible starting point for a single overseas holiday. Compare its final quote and medical-assessment outcome with the alternatives before choosing.
Southern Cross Travel Insurance International Comprehensive is our starting point for an ordinary overseas holiday in this shortlist. We would also compare 1Cover Comprehensive and Fast Cover Comprehensive using the same trip details.
This is a starting shortlist, not a finding that one policy is cheapest or best for everyone. A traveller with a medical condition, a long itinerary, a cruise or specialist activities may reach a different decision.
General information: this guide does not consider your personal objectives, financial situation, medical history or insurance needs. Read the Product Disclosure Statement (PDS), relevant supplementary documents, Target Market Determination (TMD) and your Certificate of Insurance before buying.

How we chose
We reviewed official Australian product information and current policy-document pages, focusing on medical protection, cancellation, trip length, activity options and the practical questions a traveller needs to resolve. We did not obtain a standardised set of personal quotes, purchase these policies or test their claims service.
Our categories describe reasons to compare, rather than measured superiority. Awards and customer reviews can add context, but neither establishes that a particular claim will be paid. The policy issued with your quote and any written medical acceptance matter more than a badge.
Southern Cross Travel Insurance International Comprehensive

A starting point for overseas holidays.
Southern Cross International Comprehensive brings overseas medical and evacuation cover together with other travel benefits. Its product page lists unlimited medical and evacuation cover, subject to the policy terms. That is useful to examine first when comparing protection against a major overseas medical bill.
Its policy-document page currently pairs the International Comprehensive PDS effective 12 July 2025 with a TravelCare Delay Assist supplementary PDS effective 1 July 2026. Read both where they apply to your policy. A delay-service benefit should be a secondary consideration after medical and cancellation suitability.
Our judgement is to use this as a reference quote, then ask whether another policy covers your actual risks more effectively. Check the medical decision, exclusions, cancellation amount, valuables and planned activities rather than assuming comprehensive means unrestricted cover.
Strengths
- A broad international starting point.
- Medical and evacuation benefits to compare.
- Current policy and supplementary documents available.
Drawbacks
- No proof it is cheapest for your trip.
- Limits and exclusions still apply.
- Medical acceptance is individual.
1Cover Comprehensive

Compare the final price and selected cover.
1Cover Comprehensive is a useful second quote because you can compare the selected cancellation amount and available additions against the first policy. Its comparison page distinguishes Comprehensive from Medical Only, which does not provide the same cancellation or luggage protection.
The current PDS is effective 4 March 2026. It lists Comprehensive for travellers of all ages, with journeys limited to 90 days for travellers aged 80 or over. The Overseas Frequent Traveller alternative has different eligibility: age 69 or under and a selected 21- or 45-day limit per journey.
We have described 1Cover as a value comparison, not a proven price winner. Match the cover and excess before comparing premiums. The PDS identifies 1Cover as a distributor and HDI Global Specialty SE as the insurer; the customer-facing brand is not always the legal underwriter.
Strengths
- Comprehensive and more limited plans are distinguishable.
- Selectable cancellation protection.
- Published age and trip-duration rules.
Drawbacks
- Medical Only is not an equivalent cheaper substitute.
- Annual limits differ from single-trip rules.
- Extras affect the total premium.
Fast Cover Comprehensive

Compare options for your planned activities.
Fast Cover Comprehensive is worth comparing when your itinerary includes activities or equipment that need extra attention. Its product information lists options including adventure, motorcycle, bicycle, cruise, rental-vehicle excess and specified high-value items, subject to eligibility and additional premiums.
The current PDS page identifies 16 July 2026 as the effective date. Compare the exact policy and additions offered in your quote: an activity pack name is not a promise to cover every activity, vehicle or piece of equipment.
Our judgement is that the practical value is in making the itinerary explicit. Give the provider your actual activity, riding arrangements or equipment details and check the response. Snow travel also needs a specific check of the appropriate policy or option; do not assume the ordinary Comprehensive policy automatically includes it.
Strengths
- Several ways to tailor the quoted cover.
- Useful comparison for activity-heavy itineraries.
- Current PDS is readily available.
Drawbacks
- Options can increase the premium.
- Age and activity restrictions apply.
- Equipment limits need a separate check.
Three other providers worth comparing
Cover-More: app and assistance tools
Cover-More offers Basic, Comprehensive and Comprehensive+ plans, with annual multi-trip options on its comprehensive tiers. It also offers a travel app and 24-hour assistance.
These are useful conveniences, but we have not compared emergency response times or claims outcomes. Choose the policy on its cover first. Its website says ocean or sea cruises of two or more nights need Cruise Cover included; snow, motorcycle and adventure options also require attention.
Allianz: another quote for older travellers
Allianz Comprehensive states that it is available to travellers of all ages. This does not mean every medical condition is accepted or every optional activity is available at every age.
For example, its Snow and Adventure packs require the traveller to be under 75 when the certificate is issued. Compare the actual medical decision and any age-related restrictions. Do not extend the Comprehensive plan’s age statement to every Allianz plan.
nib Direct: member and frequent-trip alternative
The earlier nib Travel Insurance website now redirects to nib Direct Travel Insurance. The current offering advertises a discount for eligible members, with exclusions and verification requirements. A discount alone does not establish the lowest final price.
Its Multi-Trip plan is for travellers under 75 at policy issue, with a choice of 15, 30 or 45 days per trip. Select enough days for the longest journey; 45 days is not automatically the limit on every purchase. The current offering is arranged through Allianz Global Assistance and underwritten by Allianz, so use its current documents rather than assuming older nib terms apply.
How to compare quotes fairly
- Use one itinerary: identical departure and return dates, destinations and travellers.
- Complete medical screening: compare the accepted conditions, exclusions and extra charges, not an unfinished estimate.
- Match cancellation needs: use your non-refundable exposure and check whether limits are per person or per policy.
- Add the same activities: include cruises, riding, snow and expensive equipment where required.
- Compare excesses: find out when each excess applies and whether medical conditions attract another one.
- Read exclusions: a lower premium may reflect less cover or a restriction that matters to you.
- Save the quote and documents: check the issued certificate against the choices you made.
Do not enter false health or traveller details just to get a cheap comparison. A preliminary estimate may change once the provider has the information needed to assess the risk.
What good cover needs to do
Overseas medical treatment and evacuation
Start with the largest potential financial exposure: a serious illness or injury overseas. Check hospital treatment, ambulance transport, medical evacuation, repatriation and the assistance team’s approval requirements. “Unlimited” is a financial limit, not an exemption from exclusions.
Smartraveller explains why overseas medical expenses and emergency assistance matter. Reciprocal healthcare arrangements are limited and do not replace travel insurance. Save the emergency number somewhere accessible without relying on your normal mobile connection.
Cancellation and additional expenses
Add up the money you could actually lose if an insured event stopped the trip: non-refundable flights, accommodation, tours and other bookings. A chosen limit that is too small can leave a shortfall, while insuring refundable bookings as though they were all at risk can distort the comparison.
The reason for cancelling matters as much as the amount. Check the policy’s insured events, exclusions and start time for cancellation cover. Changing your mind or a known problem is not automatically insured.
Luggage and valuables
Read the individual-item and category limits, depreciation rules, proof-of-ownership requirements and unattended-property exclusions. A large total luggage benefit does not guarantee reimbursement of an expensive phone, laptop or camera at its purchase price.
Make a list of the items whose loss would matter most. Ask whether they need to be specified, whether the increased limit remains inside an overall cap and whether cover applies while they are being used.
Delays and missed connections
Check the waiting period, permitted causes, daily allowance and total benefit. Keep airline notices and receipts. A disrupted itinerary does not automatically trigger every delay or cancellation benefit; the transport provider’s responsibilities and available refunds can also matter.
Rental-vehicle excess
This is usually reimbursement of an eligible rental excess or liability within a stated limit, rather than a replacement for the rental agreement’s insurance. Check vehicle types, permitted drivers, locations and damage exclusions before declining any rental-company option.
Pre-existing medical conditions
Use the policy’s definition and answer the insurer’s questions accurately. Relevant history can extend beyond a diagnosed serious illness to symptoms, investigations, medication or treatment. Being stable or well controlled does not by itself establish automatic cover.
Some conditions meet automatic-cover criteria; others need screening, extra premium or a separate excess, and some may be excluded. Keep the written assessment with the policy. If your health changes before departure, ask the insurer what the policy requires you to report and whether cover changes.
A medical exclusion can affect more than a hospital bill. Ask how it applies to cancellation, interruption and complications. If another person’s health could cause you to cancel, read the rules for non-travelling relatives or companions too.
Activities that deserve a specific check
Cruises
Identify the itinerary as a cruise and check onboard treatment, evacuation and any optional benefits such as missed departure or cabin confinement. Domestic waters do not automatically make onboard medical costs equivalent to ordinary treatment on land.
Motorcycles and scooters
Check driver and passenger cover separately, including licence requirements, engine capacity, helmets, permitted use and exclusions. A rental operator’s willingness to hand over a scooter does not establish that you are licensed or insured to ride it.
Snow and adventure activities
Match the exact activity to the policy definition. Resort boundaries, altitude, depth, guides, racing and equipment can change eligibility. Ask about an activity before booking if you cannot find a clear answer in the policy.
Single-trip versus annual multi-trip
A single-trip policy covers a nominated journey. Annual multi-trip cover runs across a year but restricts each separate journey, and can also impose age, destination and return-to-Australia requirements.
Three two-week holidays are a different insurance problem from one continuous six-month stay. An annual plan with a 45-day trip limit does not become six-month cover because its certificate lasts a year. Enter the complete dates and confirm the maximum continuous duration.
For regular travellers, compare the annual premium with realistic separate-trip quotes. Consider whether your health, destinations or activities might change during the year and what the insurer requires if they do.
A practical pre-departure check
- Confirm every traveller, destination and full travel period.
- Read the medical decision and check the certificate records the right options.
- Check current Smartraveller destination advice and the provider’s travel alerts.
- Save the policy, emergency number and evidence of important belongings.
- Give a trusted person the emergency contact details.
- Know how to contact assistance before major non-urgent treatment or evacuation arrangements.
If you need to claim
In an emergency, seek urgent help first and contact the insurer’s assistance team as soon as practical. Follow its instructions for significant treatment and transport. Keep the medical reports, invoices, receipts, carrier notices and any police report relevant to the event.
Notify the provider within its required timeframe. Explain what happened accurately and keep copies of the submission and correspondence. If a claim is declined, request the reason and relevant policy wording, then use the provider’s complaints process if you disagree.
Frequently asked questions
Which travel insurance should I quote first?
Southern Cross International Comprehensive is our first comparison for an ordinary overseas holiday in this shortlist. Obtain equivalent quotes from 1Cover and Fast Cover and make the final decision using the medical assessment and policy terms.
Which is cheapest?
We have not established a cheapest provider. Premiums depend on the traveller and trip, and a quote without required medical or activity cover is not a fair comparison.
When should I buy?
Consider cover when you begin committing non-refundable money. Check when cancellation protection starts and what it excludes. Buying after a problem becomes known does not normally insure that existing problem.
Is credit-card travel insurance enough?
It may be suitable, but read its activation requirements, insured travellers, medical rules, age limits, trip duration, excesses and benefits. Holding a card does not establish that cover is active.
Can I buy after leaving Australia?
Some providers offer already-overseas products, but timing rules, waiting periods, age limits and exclusions differ. Do not assume ordinary pre-departure cover can be bought retrospectively or covers an event that has already occurred.
Does comprehensive mean everything is covered?
No. It describes a plan level. Limits, sub-limits, exclusions, screening requirements and optional benefits still matter.
Will a policy cover a six-month stay?
Some single-trip products may suit a long journey, depending on eligibility and the quote. Many annual plans will not cover six continuous months. Confirm the complete travel period in writing.
Should older travellers only compare Allianz?
No. Allianz Comprehensive is one option, while 1Cover also lists Comprehensive for all ages with specific restrictions. Compare health acceptance, duration, activities and premium across suitable providers.
Our verdict
Start with Southern Cross, compare 1Cover on the final cost of matched cover, and examine Fast Cover when activities or equipment need specific options. Cover-More, Allianz and nib Direct are useful additional comparisons for their respective features and eligibility.
Choose the policy that fits the trip you are actually taking. A low premium cannot compensate for an exclusion affecting the main risk you needed to insure.
