Australian Airline Carry-On Limits: Size and Weight Guide

Compare current Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Rex carry-on limits, including bag dimensions, weight allowances and regional-aircraft differences.

Carry-on suitcase and backpack beside an airport baggage sizing frame

Australian airline carry-on limits are not standardised. A cabin bag accepted on one domestic flight may be overweight or too large on the next, particularly when changing airlines or connecting to a smaller regional aircraft.

This guide compares the published Economy allowances for Qantas, Virgin Australia, Jetstar and Rex. It also explains how personal items are counted, what changes on international flights and how to avoid an expensive repack at the gate.

Safest all-airline target: If you want one bag that works across the major Australian carriers in this guide, keep the main bag within 48 × 34 × 23cm and the combined carry-on weight within 7kg. That conservative target accommodates Rex regional limits as well as the higher allowances on standard Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar services.

Allowances were checked on official airline websites on 17 August 2026. They can change and may differ by aircraft, fare, cabin, frequent-flyer status, operating carrier or itinerary. Dimensions include wheels, handles and external pockets.

Qantas carry-on allowance

On standard Qantas domestic services, Economy and Business passengers may bring one overhead bag, one underseat bag and one small personal item. The published combined weight allowance is 14kg, with no individual bag weighing more than 10kg.

  • Overhead bag: maximum 56 × 36 × 23cm.
  • Underseat bag: maximum 34 × 48 × 23cm.
  • Personal item: one small cross-body bag, small handbag or laptop in a slim bag.
  • Combined weight: 14kg, with a maximum of 10kg per item.

QantasLink Dash 8-Q400 services

The allowance drops to 7kg on domestic QantasLink Dash 8-Q400 flights. Qantas notes that small wheelie bags do not fit in the overhead space and may be collected at boarding and returned after arrival.

Check the aircraft shown in your booking rather than assuming every flight carrying a Qantas number receives the standard domestic allowance.

Qantas international flights

Qantas international Economy passengers receive one overhead bag and one personal item with a 7kg maximum. International Premium Economy, Business and First generally receive a 14kg combined allowance with a maximum of 10kg per item. Special rules apply to flights departing India.

Virgin Australia carry-on allowance

Virgin Australia Economy passengers, including Velocity Red and Silver members, may bring one standard overhead bag weighing up to 8kg plus one personal item.

  • Standard bag: maximum 56 × 36 × 23cm and 8kg.
  • Personal item: maximum 45 × 33 × 20cm and small enough to fit under the seat.

Business passengers, travellers seated in Economy X and eligible Velocity Gold, Platinum or Platinum Plus members may receive up to 14kg combined across approved bag combinations. No individual item may exceed 8kg.

Virgin Australia services operated by another airline can use the operating carrier’s baggage rules. Check the wording beside “operated by” on the itinerary.

Jetstar carry-on allowance

For Jetstar Airways flights departing before 2 February 2027, an Economy Starter fare includes one main item and one small item with a combined 7kg limit.

  • Main item: maximum 56 × 36 × 23cm and stored overhead.
  • Small item: handbag, thin laptop bag or similarly small item that fits under the seat.
  • Standard combined weight: 7kg across both items.

Eligible passengers can purchase an additional 7kg or select a fare or bundle that includes 14kg of carry-on. Under that allowance, the main item cannot weigh more than 10kg, and availability can be limited by route and flight.

Jetstar changes from 2 February 2027: Jetstar has announced a new size-based model for Jetstar Airways flights. Every booking will include one underseat bag up to 40 × 30 × 20cm. An overhead bag up to 56 × 36 × 23cm will require Priority Carry-on or an eligible inclusion. The routine 7kg combined limit will be removed, but no single bag may exceed 10kg. Check rules against the departure date, not the booking date.

Rex regional carry-on allowance

Rex currently publishes a 7kg allowance on regional Saab 340 services. The main cabin bag must stay within 48 × 34 × 23cm, or 105cm when the three dimensions are added together.

Rex cabins are smaller than those on the main domestic jets. An item that meets a common 56cm cabin-bag limit can still be too long for a Rex regional flight. Rex warns that oversized carry-on presented at the gate may be offloaded and treated as checked baggage.

Why a “cabin-size” suitcase may still fail

Luggage manufacturers frequently use terms such as cabin size, carry-on approved or domestic carry-on. Those labels do not override the airline’s rules.

  • Measure the bag at its widest packed points.
  • Include wheels, fixed handles, side handles and protruding pockets.
  • Compressible fabric does not help if the packed bag cannot fit inside the airport sizing frame.
  • An expandable suitcase may meet the limit when closed but exceed it when the expansion zip is used.
  • Weight the empty bag before buying; a heavy shell and wheels can consume a large part of a 7kg allowance.

Does the personal item count towards the weight?

It depends on the airline. Jetstar’s current 7kg allowance is explicitly combined across the main and small items. Rex describes permitted personal items as part of its carry-on allowance. Qantas and Virgin Australia publish their permitted bag combinations differently.

Do not assume that moving a laptop, camera or charger into a second bag makes the weight disappear. Staff may weigh multiple pieces together where the allowance is combined, and an overstuffed “personal item” may be treated as another cabin bag.

What happens on connecting flights?

Pack to the lowest allowance on the itinerary. This is especially important when a domestic jet connects to a regional turboprop or when a Qantas flight connects to Jetstar or another partner.

The airline operating the aircraft normally controls what can physically enter its cabin. Even when every sector appears on one ticket, check each flight number, aircraft and operating carrier before departure.

Domestic and international liquid rules are different

Most purely domestic Australian flights do not apply the international 100mL restriction to ordinary liquids, aerosols and gels. However, international restrictions apply when:

  • Departing Australia on an international flight.
  • Transiting through Australia between countries.
  • Taking a domestic sector that departs from an Australian international terminal.
  • Boarding an inbound flight at its last overseas departure point before Australia.

For these journeys, each liquid, aerosol or gel container must be 100mL or 100g or less. The containers must fit inside one transparent, resealable bag per passenger, with the four sides of the sealed area totalling no more than 80cm.

A container larger than 100mL is not accepted merely because it is partly empty. Medicines, medical items and baby products can have exemptions, but supporting evidence may be requested.

Powder restrictions on international journeys

Australian rules distinguish between organic and inorganic powders. Organic powders such as baby formula, protein powder, coffee, flour and most cosmetics are not subject to the quantity limit, although they may need to be presented for screening.

Inorganic powders such as salt, sand and some talcum or foot powders are limited to a total of 350mL or 350g per passenger. The capacity of the container counts, so transferring or tipping out part of the powder at the airport does not make an oversized container acceptable.

Power banks and spare batteries

Never place power banks or spare lithium batteries in checked baggage. CASA requires them to remain in the cabin with their terminals protected against short circuits. If your carry-on bag is taken at the gate for loading into the hold, remove every power bank and spare battery before handing it over.

CASA’s current guidance allows no more than two power banks per person and notes that airlines may impose stricter limits. Batteries above 100Wh and up to 160Wh require airline approval, while batteries above 160Wh are generally prohibited in passenger baggage except for specific mobility-aid arrangements.

Individual airlines can also restrict whether a power bank may be used or charged during the flight. Check the carrier’s current battery rules before travel.

Medication and medical equipment

Keep essential medication in carry-on baggage rather than placing all of it in a checked suitcase that could be delayed. Leave prescription medicine labelled and consider carrying a doctor’s letter, particularly for liquids, needles, controlled medicines or devices that may require explanation.

Airlines can provide additional arrangements for approved medical or mobility equipment, but notification and size requirements may apply. Contact the airline early instead of arriving at the gate with an unconfirmed exemption.

Infants, children and strollers

Infant allowances differ substantially. A lap infant may not receive a normal cabin allowance, although an additional bag for food, nappies or care items may be permitted. Children occupying their own seats generally receive the fare’s normal allowance.

A compact stroller may count as carry-on on some aircraft but must be checked or collected at the gate on others. Confirm the operating aircraft and the airline’s infant-equipment rules before relying on the stroller as a cabin item.

How to stay under 7kg

  • Start with a lightweight backpack or cabin bag rather than a heavy hard-shell case.
  • Wear the heaviest suitable shoes and outer layer.
  • Use small toiletry containers and avoid carrying products available at the destination.
  • Choose one versatile charger where compatible instead of several power adaptors.
  • Download books and documents rather than carrying paper copies.
  • Weigh the main bag and personal item together when the allowance is combined.
  • Leave a small margin for food, water bottles, duty-free purchases or items added after check-in.

Avoiding gate fees and delays

  1. Open the airline’s baggage page again shortly before travel.
  2. Check the fare, cabin, route and operating carrier shown on the booking.
  3. Measure the bag fully packed, including wheels and handles.
  4. Use reliable luggage scales and check all pieces included in a combined limit.
  5. Purchase additional carry-on or checked baggage online before reaching the airport when required.
  6. Keep medication, identification, valuables and permitted batteries easy to remove if the bag is gate-checked.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard carry-on size in Australia?

There is no universal standard. The common full-size limit is 56 × 36 × 23cm, used by Qantas, Virgin Australia and Jetstar for an overhead bag. Rex regional services use a smaller 48 × 34 × 23cm limit.

Is Australian carry-on still limited to 7kg?

Not on every airline. Jetstar Economy remains 7kg combined for flights departing before 2 February 2027, and Rex regional services publish 7kg. Virgin Australia Economy permits an 8kg standard bag, while Qantas standard domestic jet services publish 14kg combined with a maximum of 10kg per item.

Do airlines weigh carry-on baggage?

They can. Enforcement may occur at check-in, the boarding gate or both. A bag that was not weighed on a previous trip is not guaranteed to pass next time.

Can I take a handbag as well as a cabin suitcase?

Usually, provided the airline and fare include a personal item and it fits under the seat. The handbag may still count towards a combined item or weight allowance.

Can I take a 56cm suitcase on Rex?

Do not rely on it. Rex’s published regional limit is 48 × 34 × 23cm, reflecting the smaller Saab 340 cabin. Use a smaller bag or arrange checked baggage.

Do wheels count in carry-on dimensions?

Yes. Measure the complete external size, including wheels, fixed handles and protruding pockets.

What if the overhead lockers are full?

The airline may require a compliant bag to be checked at the gate for operational reasons. Remove power banks, spare batteries, essential medication, travel documents and valuables before surrendering it.

Final verdict

For the widest compatibility across the Australian airlines covered here, pack to the strictest practical combination: 48 × 34 × 23cm and no more than 7kg across your carry-on items.

If travelling only on a standard domestic Qantas jet service, the published allowance is substantially higher. Virgin Australia Economy allows an 8kg standard bag, while Jetstar and Rex require more disciplined packing under their current 7kg rules.

Always check the exact flight again before leaving home. The aircraft, operating carrier, fare and departure date matter more than the logo displayed when the booking was made.
