Practical help before replacing it

TV Has Sound but No Picture: What to Check Before Replacing It

Your TV still has sound but the screen is black? Work through these safe checks for inputs, HDMI devices, power resets and picture settings before arranging a repair or replacing the television.

Black-screen television with remote, set-top box and HDMI cable in a modern living room

If your television still produces sound but the screen is black, the television may not necessarily need replacing. The problem could be as simple as an incorrect input, a disconnected HDMI cable, a temporary software fault or a picture setting that has been switched off.

Work through the checks below in order. They begin with the quickest and safest possibilities before moving towards professional diagnosis.

Before you begin: keep the troubleshooting safe

Do not remove the television’s rear cover or attempt an internal electrical repair. Televisions contain electrical components that should only be inspected by a qualified repairer.

Turn the television off and unplug it immediately if you notice:

  • A burning smell or unusual heat.
  • Sparks, smoke or repeated popping sounds.
  • A damaged power cord or plug.
  • Liquid inside or around the television.
  • A cracked panel or damage caused by an impact.

If none of these warning signs are present, continue with the external checks below.

First, confirm that the television is actually producing sound

Turn the television on and increase the volume slightly. Listen for a broadcast, streaming program, menu sound or audio from a connected device.

If there is no picture and no sound, the television may have a broader power or startup problem. This guide is specifically for situations where audio is working but the picture is missing.

Check whether the television menu appears

Press the television’s Home, Menu, Settings or Volume button. Use the television’s physical buttons if the remote control is not responding.

The result provides an important clue:

What appears What it may indicate
The television menu or volume bar appears The screen can produce a picture. The problem is more likely connected to the selected input, an external device, an application or its cabling.
The menu does not appear, but sound continues The television may have a picture setting, software or internal display fault that requires further diagnosis.
A warning or “No signal” message appears The television is working but is not receiving a usable signal from the selected source.
A status light repeatedly flashes The flashing pattern may represent a model-specific error. Check the manufacturer’s support information for that television.

Make sure the correct input is selected

Press the Input, Source or AV button on the remote. Move through the available inputs slowly and allow several seconds for each one to load.

For example, a streaming box connected to HDMI 2 will not appear while the television is set to HDMI 1.

If the television menu is visible but every input remains black, continue with the connected-device checks.

Restart the television properly

A full power restart can clear temporary software and HDMI communication problems.

  1. Turn the television off.
  2. Unplug it from the wall power point.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the power and turn the television on.

If the television is normally connected through a power board, test it directly from a suitable wall outlet where practical. Do not use an outlet or cable that appears damaged.

Disconnect every external device

Turn the television off and disconnect all external equipment, including:

  • Streaming boxes and media players.
  • Game consoles.
  • Set-top boxes and recorders.
  • Soundbars or receivers connected through HDMI.
  • USB drives.
  • Laptops and computers.

Turn the television back on with nothing connected except power and the television’s aerial connection, if used.

Try opening the television menu or a built-in application. If the picture returns, one of the disconnected devices, cables or inputs is probably causing the problem.

Reconnect devices one at a time

Reconnect one device and test it before connecting the next. This makes it much easier to identify which item causes the black screen.

For each device:

  • Confirm that the device itself is switched on.
  • Restart the device by disconnecting its power briefly.
  • Try a different HDMI input on the television.
  • Try another known-working HDMI cable.
  • Check that both ends of the cable are inserted securely.
  • Test the device on another television or monitor where possible.

If only one connected device produces a black screen, the problem is more likely with that device, cable or its settings than with the television panel.

Check for a picture-off or energy-saving setting

Some televisions include settings that turn off the display while leaving audio active. The option may be called:

  • Picture Off.
  • Screen Off.
  • Audio Only.
  • Energy Saving.
  • Presence Sensor.

If the television menu appears, open the picture or energy settings and confirm that one of these options has not been enabled accidentally.

Also check the brightness and backlight controls. Avoid changing every picture setting at once because that can make it harder to identify the actual cause.

Restart or update the television software

If menus remain visible, use the television’s normal restart command where available. Check for a software update through the settings menu while the television is connected to the internet.

Menu names differ between manufacturers and models, so follow the instructions supplied for your exact television.

Use a factory reset only as a last software step

A factory reset removes saved applications, accounts, Wi-Fi details, channel settings and picture adjustments. Only attempt it if:

  • The television menu is accessible.
  • The simpler checks have failed.
  • You understand that the television will need to be configured again.
  • You are following instructions for the exact model.

If the television has no visible menu, do not perform an undocumented button sequence found on an unrelated website. Contact the manufacturer or a qualified repairer for the correct procedure.

When the television probably needs professional diagnosis

Arrange professional assistance when:

  • The screen remains black even with every external device disconnected.
  • No television menu, volume indicator or startup logo appears.
  • The television repeatedly restarts.
  • A status light displays a repeated error pattern.
  • The picture appears briefly and then disappears.
  • The television has suffered liquid or impact damage.

Possible internal causes can include the panel, backlight, power circuitry or display-control components. These cannot be reliably distinguished through ordinary external checks and should not be treated as do-it-yourself repairs.

Check your Australian consumer rights before paying for a repair

Find the television’s model number, approximate purchase date, receipt and retailer details before contacting support.

Australian consumer guarantees may continue to apply after a written manufacturer’s warranty has expired. Products must be of acceptable quality, including being durable for a reasonable period considering their type, price and other circumstances.

Contact the retailer as well as the manufacturer if you believe the television failed earlier than a reasonable consumer would expect. Do not assume that an expired written warranty automatically removes every available remedy.

Repair or replace?

Before replacing the television, ask for a written diagnosis and repair quotation. Compare:

  • The total repair cost.
  • The television’s age and original price.
  • Whether the repair includes a warranty.
  • The expected condition and remaining life of the television.
  • The price of a suitable replacement rather than an unnecessarily upgraded model.

A black screen caused by a cable, external device or setting costs very little to correct. An internal failure requires a qualified assessment before you can make a sensible repair-versus-replacement decision.
