Our top three air purifier picks

A good air purifier supplies enough filtered air for the room without becoming too noisy or expensive to keep running. The useful comparison is clean air delivery rate, filter availability and tolerable operating speed—not the largest coverage number on the box.
Our overall choice is the Philips AC4221/11. The Philips AC2220/10 is especially attractive for bedrooms at its checked A$297 price. Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 remains a value alternative to compare, but its current Australian checkout price could not be confirmed during this update.
Portable purifiers work room by room. They do not fix moisture, remove settled dust or replace ventilation when outdoor air is clean. During smoke events, follow public-health and emergency advice rather than assuming a purifier makes every indoor environment safe.

Checked 27 September 2026. Prices and delivery availability can change. Breville LAP508 is now listed as discontinued and is discussed separately below.
1. Philips PureProtect Pro 4200 Series AC4221/11
Philips PureProtect Pro 4200 Series AC4221/11

Strong airflow for a main living area.
The AC4221/11 combines a published 600 m³/h particle CADR with HEPA NanoProtect and double activated-carbon filtration. Philips quotes a minimum noise level of 15 dB(A); that is not the sound level at maximum cleaning output.
At A$490 on Appliances Online when checked, it offers a compelling combination of capacity and price. Its automatic sensing and app controls can make everyday operation easier, although you should still choose a sufficient fan speed for the conditions.
Our sizing example gives approximately 50 m² at five equivalent air changes per hour with a 2.4-metre ceiling. That is a calculation using maximum published CADR, not a guarantee of smoke clearance or proof of performance at sleep speed.
Buy it when a larger room or faster initial cleaning justifies the extra capacity. Before ordering, identify the correct replacement filter and its current cost. A purifier is a continuing filter purchase as well as an appliance purchase.
Price: A$490.
Why choose it
- High published particle CADR
- Good capacity at the checked price
- Automatic operation and app controls
What to consider
- Maximum airflow is louder than sleep mode
- Large marketing coverage is not rapid-cleaning coverage
- Filter availability and cost need checking
Best for: A household wanting one capable unit for a main living room.
2. Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6
Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6

A capable smart alternative whose value depends on today’s price.
Xiaomi publishes a particle CADR of 443 m³/h, a 29–50 m² effective-area guide and an 18.65 dB(A) sleep-mode figure. Its filter is described as high-efficiency; we have not relabelled it as certified HEPA.
The official page also lists activated carbon, UV filter care and negative-ion functionality. These features were missing from the earlier draft. If you want mechanical filtration alone, confirm the exact model’s controls and whether those additional functions can remain disabled before buying.
Xiaomi Home provides scheduling, remote control and filter-life information. Those conveniences suit someone comfortable using an app and account, but they should not outweigh the ability to source the correct replacement filter.
The earlier A$299 price has not been carried forward as a verified current offer. Compare the checkout total with the A$297 Philips 2200. The Mijia is a value candidate, not automatically the cheaper purchase.
Price: Confirm current checkout price.
Why choose it
- Useful published airflow
- App scheduling and filter monitoring
- Compact upright format
What to consider
- Current price needs confirmation
- Includes UV and negative-ion features
- Do not confuse filter marketing with a formal HEPA classification
Best for: Buyers comparing smart controls and airflow against the final delivered price.
3. Philips PureProtect Quiet 2200 Series AC2220/10
Philips PureProtect Quiet 2200 Series AC2220/10

A strong bedroom option at the checked price.
The AC2220/10 is our bedroom pick because it combines useful airflow with a low published sleep-mode noise figure. Philips specifies 420 m³/h CADR and a minimum of 13 dB(A). Bing Lee listed the white Australian model at A$297 and in stock when checked.
Its filtration uses a pre-filter, HEPA NanoProtect and activated carbon. Automatic operation and app control are included. The five-air-change calculation gives roughly 35 m² with a 2.4-metre ceiling at maximum published CADR.
Do not assume that sleep mode delivers that full capacity. If overnight particle levels are the priority, choose the highest comfortable setting and allow enough airflow for the room. Running it higher beforehand does not remove the need for continuing filtration.
Philips advertises extended filter life under defined conditions. Treat that as a maximum claim rather than a guaranteed replacement interval. Dust, smoke and operating hours change the practical maintenance cost.
Price: A$297.
Why choose it
- Competitive checked price
- Useful airflow for a bedroom
- Low minimum-noise claim
What to consider
- Sleep-speed airflow is lower
- Minimum noise figures are not directly comparable across all tests
- Replacement life varies with conditions
Best for: Bedrooms and studies where everyday noise and purchase price matter.
4. Winix ZERO+ PRO AUS-1250AZPU — pet-focused alternative
Winix’s Australian range identifies the ZERO+ PRO by model AUS-1250AZPU. Its dedicated pet filter, True HEPA stage, carbon filtration and PlasmaWave feature make it worth comparing for households wanting separate filter stages.
The pet filter is useful for larger airborne material before it reaches the main filter. It does not collect hair already lying on a sofa, floor or bedding. Continue ordinary cleaning and compare the price of the complete replacement-filter set.
The Australian range page confirms the model, but a reliable current direct purchase offer was not available during this check. We have therefore omitted a current price and avoided treating a broad range-page link as verified stock.
Choose it for: its filter arrangement and pet-focused pre-filter. Confirm current availability, exact specifications and PlasmaWave controls with the Australian supplier.

5. Dyson Big+Quiet Formaldehyde BP04 — premium alternative
The BP04 combines particle filtration with carbon, formaldehyde-focused technology and projected fan airflow. It appeals to buyers who want the sensing, controls and circulation functions as a complete package.
It is harder to compare directly with the CADR-led models. We have not used a comparable particle CADR for this model, so it is excluded from the room-area calculation below. A maximum room claim should not be treated as equivalent to the same calculated air-change rate.
The previous A$999 promotion is not presented as a current offer. Compare the live Dyson price and both filter replacement costs before deciding. Fan airflow can make occupants feel cooler, but the appliance is not an air conditioner.
Choose it for: the premium combined feature set. For straightforward particle cleaning on a budget, start with the Philips models.
Previous pick: Breville LAP508 is discontinued
Breville’s Australian product page now explicitly marks the Smart Air Plus Connect LAP508 as discontinued. It is no longer one of our current new-purchase recommendations.
The published specification remains 337 m³/h CADR with a HEPA-13 and carbon system. Existing owners can continue using the support information and should confirm availability of compatible consumables. Remaining retailer stock may still exist, but that does not make it a current manufacturer model.
If considering clearance stock, ask about warranty handling and replacement filters before purchase. We have removed the old A$465 price and the unqualified recommendation based on ongoing local support.

How we chose
This is a research-led comparison using Australian manufacturer information and retailer listings. We have not independently measured particle removal, noise or energy use. Our judgement considers airflow, realistic room sizing, controls, filter access and cost.
We distinguish current checked prices from historical figures and unconfirmed offers. A product page establishes specifications; it does not always establish stock at your postcode. Prices should be compared for the exact Australian model and package.
We do not treat claims about filter-media performance as proof that a device prevents illness in a home. Nor do we award a higher ranking simply because a machine includes UV, ionisation or a long list of sensors.
How large should your purifier be?
Measure the room you intend to clean, including ceiling height. CADR describes an equivalent flow of cleaned air. Dividing it by the room volume gives a useful estimate of equivalent air changes per hour.
Room area ≈ CADR ÷ desired air changes per hour ÷ ceiling height.
The following examples use five air changes per hour and a 2.4-metre ceiling. Five is a comparison assumption, not a universal safety threshold or a guarantee of protection.
| Model | CADR used | Calculated area at 5 ACH |
|---|---|---|
| Philips AC4221/11 | 600 m³/h | 50 m² |
| Mijia Smart Air Purifier 6 | 443 m³/h | About 37 m² |
| Philips AC2220/10 | 420 m³/h | 35 m² |
These estimates assume the published maximum CADR. Lower speeds, filter loading, room layout and air leaking in affect actual results. A tall ceiling needs more clean airflow than a low ceiling over the same floor area.
For example, a 20 m² bedroom with a 2.4-metre ceiling contains about 48 m³ of air. Five equivalent air changes would require about 240 m³/h. This calculation helps compare machines, but without airflow figures for each speed it cannot tell you whether a particular sleep setting is sufficient.
A bigger purifier may provide useful headroom, but check noise at a workable speed. Buying a powerful unit and leaving it on its lowest setting is not automatically better than choosing a quieter machine with adequate output.
What the filter stages do
Pre-filter
The coarse first stage catches larger material and protects the main filter. Follow its cleaning instructions. A washable pre-filter does not mean the complete filter assembly can be washed.
Particle filter
High-efficiency media target airborne particles. Fit and sealing matter because air bypassing the filter is not processed through it. Use the specified replacement and install it in the correct orientation after removing any shipping wrap.
Activated carbon
Carbon is used for some odours and gases. Do not equate the presence of a thin carbon layer with protection from all gaseous pollutants. Identify and control the source rather than relying on an appliance to make an ongoing release harmless.
UV and ionisation
These are additional technologies. They do not replace adequate mechanical filtration and airflow. The Mijia’s official description includes both UV and negative ions; Winix includes PlasmaWave. If avoiding such functions matters to you, confirm the controls and operating behaviour before purchase.
Noise: compare the setting you will use
The quietest advertised number is normally measured at a low setting. The largest CADR is typically associated with maximum operation. Those two figures should not be combined as though the machine delivers both simultaneously.
Sound character matters as well as the number. A steady fan may be tolerable while a changing speed or tonal sound is distracting. Where possible, listen in person and review return conditions before buying for a noise-sensitive bedroom.
Auto mode is convenient, but it reacts to what the onboard sensor detects. It cannot measure every pollutant or understand every reason you want filtration. Manual speed selection can be useful when you need consistent airflow.
Filter costs and ownership
Before buying, find the exact replacement filter on an Australian supplier’s website. Check that it is for your model, whether different stages are bought separately and whether stock is available. Similar-looking cylindrical filters are not necessarily interchangeable.
Compare total cost over several years: appliance, filters and electricity. A cheap machine with costly or difficult-to-find consumables may be poor value. Conversely, a claimed multi-year filter life may not reflect a smoky or dusty home.
Filter-life indicators estimate replacement needs; they do not guarantee that every part of a filter remains effective. Follow the manual, inspect and maintain the pre-filter, and replace consumables as instructed for your conditions.
Using a purifier effectively
- Choose a priority room. A bedroom or living room you can close off is easier to manage than an entire open-plan home.
- Allow airflow. Follow the manual’s clearances and keep intakes and outlets away from curtains, furniture and obstructions.
- Remove filter packaging. Check the installation steps before first use.
- Select enough airflow. Use a speed suited to the room and conditions, rather than assuming the lowest setting is always enough.
- Maintain it regularly. Clean only the parts the manual permits and replace filters with compatible items.
- Control pollution sources. Address smoke, cooking emissions, leaks and dampness instead of expecting filtration to solve them.
Bushfire smoke and ventilation
NSW Health advises reducing outdoor smoke entering the home and using a suitable purifier with a HEPA filter where available. Keep track of local advice and avoid adding indoor smoke through candles, smoking or similar activities.
When outdoor air improves, ventilate as advised. Filtration does not generally remove accumulated carbon dioxide or supply fresh air. A closed room also needs to remain safe from heat; follow local public-health advice if conditions become uncomfortable or unsafe.
A purifier is only part of a smoke plan. People with a medical action plan should continue following it, and urgent symptoms or evacuation advice take priority over appliance settings.
What a purifier cannot do
- Clean every room through closed doors.
- Remove dust or pet hair already settled on surfaces.
- Repair leaks or remove the cause of dampness and mould.
- Act as a dehumidifier or air conditioner.
- Guarantee removal of every gas or dangerous exposure.
- Replace medical assessment or prescribed treatment.
Regular cleaning and source control remain necessary. If the real problem is condensation, a leak or inadequate extraction, buying a purifier may leave the main cause untouched.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Philips AC4221/11 for higher airflow in a main room. Choose the Philips AC2220/10 for a lower-cost bedroom option. Compare the Mijia 6 if its current price and smart controls appeal, after checking its additional filtration functions.
The Winix is a specialist alternative for its pet-filter arrangement, while the Dyson suits buyers who value its broader premium feature set. The discontinued Breville is no longer a first-choice new purchase.
Frequently asked questions
Are air purifiers worth buying?
They can be useful for airborne particles in a particular room when correctly sized and maintained. They are less useful when the underlying problem needs source control, repairs or ventilation.
Is the HEPA label enough?
No. Also compare airflow, room volume, noise and replacement-filter availability. An efficient filter moving too little air can still be a poor match for a large room.
Can one unit clean my whole house?
Usually a portable unit should be planned around one room or connected space. Closed doors and room layout limit circulation. Multiple appropriately sized units may be needed.
Should it run overnight?
Follow the model’s instructions for extended use. Keep it unobstructed and select a speed that balances noise with the required airflow. The quietest setting is not automatically sufficient.
Will it collect pet hair?
It can catch some airborne material that reaches the intake. It does not replace vacuuming, laundry or cleaning hair from furniture.
How often do filters need replacing?
Follow the exact model’s instructions. Usage, smoke, dust and other conditions change lifespan, so a maximum advertising claim should not be your only maintenance plan.
Is a purifier also a cooling appliance?
Some models provide noticeable fan airflow. That can improve personal comfort, but it does not make the device an air conditioner or lower the room temperature in the same way.
Final verdict
The Philips AC4221/11 is our overall starting point for its higher published airflow and checked A$490 price. The AC2220/10 is a strong bedroom choice at A$297.
Compare the Mijia’s current price before calling it the best value. Whatever you buy, match the room volume, maintain the filters and use enough airflow. Those decisions matter more than an oversized coverage claim.
