Our overall pick for warm rooms

Ausclimate Large 35L ACD135

A higher-capacity compressor with adjustable humidity control and continuous drainage. Choose a desiccant model instead when the main problem is a cold, unheated room.

The Ausclimate ACD135 is our best overall starting point for a warm or heated Australian room. The Ionmax Vienne ION630 is the better match for cold-room condensation, while the Breville Smart Dry Connect LAD208 suits smaller spaces and buyers who value app control.

The right machine depends on temperature, moisture load and where you can drain or empty it. A larger litres-per-day number is not automatically a better purchase. Identify the moisture source before relying on an appliance to manage it.

This is a research-led comparison of published specifications and Australian offers. We have not independently laboratory-tested these machines or measured their extraction, noise or running costs.

The extraction figures use different test conditions and are not a direct performance ranking. Manufacturer room-size estimates are also guides, not promises for every building.

How we chose

We prioritised temperature suitability, adjustable humidity control, drainage, manageable dimensions, local documentation and value. The three leading picks cover a larger warm room, a cold room and a compact room.

We also considered the Mitsubishi Electric MJ-EV38HR-A, De’Longhi DDSX220WF-WH and Kmart Large Dehumidifier. Their different strengths and limitations are covered below. A premium model should solve a particular problem; a basic model should not be dismissed if it meets a modest need.

We checked Amazon Australia and eBay Australia but could not verify exact purchase listings for all three leading models. The main buttons therefore link to their Australian brand stores. A price comparison should always match the complete model number and included accessories.

Best overall

1. Ausclimate Large 35L ACD135

Ausclimate Large 35L ACD135 dehumidifier on a white background
Ausclimate ACD135 shown above.

Higher-capacity compressor for warm or heated rooms.

35L maximumCompressorContinuous drainage

The ACD135 is our first choice for a larger warm or heated room. Its adjustable humidity control and drainage hose are more useful for everyday moisture management than extra connected features.

Ausclimate rates it at 35 litres per day under 30°C and 80% relative humidity conditions. The manual lists 485W, a maximum noise figure of 45dB(A), and a 5–35°C operating range. A cold bedroom will not reproduce that headline collection rate.

Two details need care: the product page lists both 5L and 4.3L tank capacities. Confirm the supplied unit’s tank with the seller if emptying frequency matters. The manual specifies a two-year domestic warranty, with two additional years available through product registration.

This recommendation is for the current ACD135 listing, not an assumption that every specification from the older WDH-930DA applies. Match the model on the order confirmation.

Reasons to choose it

  • Strong warm-condition extraction rating for the listed price.
  • Adjustable humidity control and gravity drainage.
  • Warranty extension available through registration.

Reasons to reconsider

  • Less suitable for a cold, unheated room than a desiccant model.
  • Published tank figures conflict; confirm before purchase.
  • At 14.1kg, carrying it upstairs requires consideration.

Best for: Larger warm or heated rooms where moisture removal matters more than app control.

Listed price: A$449. The official store’s product data accepts orders at A$449, although its page also contains a conflicting sold-out label. Confirm dispatch before paying.

Best for cold rooms

2. Ionmax Vienne ION630

Ionmax Vienne ION630 dehumidifier on a white background
Ionmax Vienne ION630 shown above.

Desiccant drying for cold spaces and winter condensation.

Desiccant4.2L tankDigital humidity

The Vienne ION630 is the cold-room alternative. Its desiccant system uses an absorbent material regenerated with heat, making it a better starting point for an unheated winter room than choosing a compressor purely by its maximum extraction number.

Ionmax rates collection at 10 litres per day at 20°C and 60% relative humidity. This is a different test from the Ausclimate’s warmer, wetter conditions. The smaller number does not establish poorer performance in your room.

Specifications include a 4.2L tank, continuous drainage, selectable humidity targets, laundry mode and a two-year warranty. Listed power consumption is 420–740W, so ongoing electricity use deserves attention. The warmth it adds can help in winter but may be unwelcome in summer.

This is the ION630 Vienne shown in the supplied image, not the ION632 from the earlier draft.

Reasons to choose it

  • Desiccant technology suits cold-room moisture control.
  • Digital humidity setting and continuous drainage.
  • Lighter to move than the large Ausclimate.

Reasons to reconsider

  • Higher rated power draw, particularly on stronger settings.
  • Warm outlet air can be uncomfortable in hot weather.
  • No app control listed.

Best for: Cold bedrooms, winter condensation and indoor laundry drying within the manual’s placement limits.

Listed price: A$549. Ionmax lists the ION630 as in stock. Confirm postcode delivery and the complete checkout price.

Best for small rooms

3. Breville Smart Dry Connect LAD208WHT

Breville Smart Dry Connect LAD208WHT dehumidifier on a white background
Breville Smart Dry Connect LAD208 shown above.

Compact compressor with automatic and app controls.

Compact footprintApp control2.5L tank

The Smart Dry Connect is our compact choice for a bedroom, home office or small laundry that is reasonably warm. It offers automatic humidity management plus Breville Home Connect app control, rather than a simple on/off-only arrangement.

The LAD208 manual rates extraction at 10 litres per day at 30°C and 80% humidity, falling to 5 litres at 27°C and 60%. Those two published figures show why the headline number alone is a poor guide to everyday collection.

Its 25 × 25cm footprint is useful where floor space is limited. The manual lists a 2.5L tank, 200W rated power and 9.5kg weight. Breville includes a drainage hose and recommends the model for rooms up to 30m².

Pre-filter and carbon filtration are secondary functions. Buy it for moisture control; it is not equivalent to a dedicated HEPA air purifier.

Reasons to choose it

  • Small footprint and automatic humidity control.
  • App access for monitoring and settings.
  • Includes a continuous-drainage hose.

Reasons to reconsider

  • Lower extraction capacity than the Ausclimate.
  • Small tank may need more frequent emptying.
  • Compressor performance still depends on temperature.

Best for: Smaller warm rooms where compact dimensions and connected controls justify the price.

Listed price: A$419. Breville lists A$419 with an Add to Cart option. Confirm the LAD208 white model and current delivery timing.

4. Mitsubishi Electric MJ-EV38HR-A: premium alternative

The MJ-EV38HR-A is worth comparing for frequent heavy-duty use, particularly when lower-speed noise and laundry controls matter. Mitsubishi lists an inverter compressor, a 38L maximum extraction rating at 30°C and 80% relative humidity, and a 5.5L tank.

The inverter adjusts output rather than relying only on full-power operation. Laundry functions and directed airflow may be useful if indoor washing is a regular source of moisture. Its substantial size and weight make it more suitable for moving on one level than carrying between floors.

We have not retained the draft’s A$1,385 as a currently available purchase offer. Obtain a current stocked quote before comparing its value with the ACD135. A premium price is difficult to justify for occasional condensation in a small room.

The extra particle filtration should not be treated as equivalent to a high-airflow dedicated purifier. Choose this appliance primarily for humidity control.

5. De’Longhi DDSX220WF-WH: smart combination option

De’Longhi’s Tasciugo AriaDry Pure combines compressor dehumidification with app access and additional particle filtration. Its Australian product page lists A$649 and a maximum extraction claim of 21L per day.

This is the alternative to consider when remote control and a replaceable E12 HEPA-type filter are specifically useful. Those features add convenience, but do not establish better water removal per dollar than the larger Ausclimate.

Allow for replacement filters. Filter efficiency describes what happens to air passing through the filter; it does not by itself establish how quickly the appliance cleans a whole room. Compare a published clean air delivery rate when choosing an appliance primarily for particle removal.

Check the current purchase option and delivery estimate with De’Longhi. We would pay the premium for a clear combined-use requirement, rather than buying extra filtration simply because it appears on the specification sheet.

6. Kmart Large Dehumidifier: lowest-cost alternative

Kmart lists its Large Dehumidifier, product 43135790, at A$155. It is a compressor appliance with a 10L-per-day maximum claim, a 2.2L tank and optional continuous drainage. The stated room area is only about 10–15m².

Its main compromise is on/off-only control. You do not get the adjustable humidity target that makes the leading models easier to manage automatically. A separate hygrometer helps you decide when the room is dry enough.

Kmart lists 220–270W and a 12-month manufacturer warranty. Check stock for your postcode. It can be a sensible small-room purchase when cost is the main constraint, but the word “Large” does not make it a whole-house solution.

Compressor or desiccant?

A compressor model cools a surface inside the appliance so airborne moisture condenses and drains away. A desiccant model captures moisture in an absorbent material and uses heat to regenerate it. Both remove water, but their operating characteristics differ.

Room or priority Starting point Main trade-off
Warm or regularly heated room Compressor Collection drops as conditions become colder and drier.
Cold, unheated winter room Desiccant Higher power draw and warmer outlet air.
Small warm bedroom or office Compact compressor Lower capacity and more frequent tank checks.
Large moisture load Higher-capacity unit with a suitable drain More space, noise and purchase cost.

Use the room temperature during the hours the machine will run, not the outdoor forecast or the temperature of a different room. If the bedroom is unheated overnight, choosing from summer extraction figures can produce a disappointing result.

Why litres-per-day ratings mislead

A rating measured at 30°C and 80% humidity describes a favourable laboratory condition. It does not promise the same collection in a cool bedroom. The amount of water available and the appliance’s efficiency both change with conditions.

The Ionmax’s 10L rating uses 20°C and 60% humidity. The Breville manual publishes two conditions, giving 10L at 30°C/80% and 5L at 27°C/60%. Compare like conditions whenever possible and ask the supplier for cooler-temperature results when winter is the main concern.

A slowing collection rate can also be a good sign: the room may be approaching its target. Judge progress alongside humidity readings and the underlying dampness problem, rather than expecting a full tank on every run.

What humidity should you aim for?

About 50% relative humidity is a practical initial setting for many rooms. Monitor the result and follow the appliance instructions. Avoid chasing the lowest possible reading: the aim is to manage dampness without unnecessary drying or electricity use.

Place a separate hygrometer away from the machine’s outlet, direct sun and other local heat or moisture sources. The appliance measures conditions near itself, so another part of the room may read differently.

Persistent condensation or mould needs investigation even if a single displayed reading looks acceptable. A dehumidifier cannot diagnose leaks, insulation defects or moisture trapped inside building materials.

Estimate running costs before buying

Estimated cost = power in kilowatts × operating hours × electricity tariff.

For example, 485W is 0.485kW. At an illustrative A$0.35/kWh, eight hours continuously drawing that power would cost about A$1.36. This is arithmetic using rated power, not a measured daily bill.

Actual consumption depends on settings and cycling. A machine may stop its compressor at the target while other functions behave differently. A suitable plug-in energy meter can measure your own routine.

Compare the moisture problem solved, not wattage alone. A low-power unit running constantly may be poor value if it never controls the room. Equally, a powerful appliance left in continuous mode after the room has dried wastes money.

Tank or continuous drainage?

A tank is convenient when you move the appliance between rooms. Check whether you can remove, carry and pour it comfortably. Full-tank shut-off prevents further collection until it is emptied and refitted correctly.

Gravity drainage needs a secure downhill path to a suitable outlet. Do not assume the included hose can pump water into a high sink. Check for kinks, loose connections and drainage failures before leaving a long-running setup unattended.

Choose a position that gives you access to the tank, filter and controls. An appliance wedged into a narrow corner may fit physically while lacking the airflow clearance required by its manual.

Indoor laundry drying

A dehumidifier can collect moisture released by washing in a contained room. Spread clothes on a rack, maintain the required distance from the appliance and use the supported laundry setting where appropriate.

Never drape clothes over the machine or allow them to block an inlet or outlet. Keep dripping items and wet floors away from electrical equipment. Empty the tank when required or use a correctly installed drain.

Laundry mode is usually intended for a sustained moisture load. Switch back to a suitable automatic target when the washing is dry rather than leaving the stronger setting running indefinitely.

Noise and bedroom use

Published dB figures can use different settings and measuring conditions. They are useful context, but do not guarantee how comfortable a particular hum, fan or compressor cycle will feel beside a bed.

Consider drying the bedroom before sleep, then using an appropriate lower setting or turning the machine off if conditions allow. Check whether a sleep mode changes the humidity target as well as dimming the lights.

A stable floor and correct clearance can reduce avoidable vibration and airflow noise. Do not hide the appliance behind curtains or cover it to make it quieter.

What a dehumidifier cannot fix

  • Roof, plumbing or window leaks.
  • Failed waterproofing or rising damp.
  • Poor bathroom and kitchen extraction.
  • A dryer discharging moist air indoors.
  • Moisture from an unflued gas heater.
  • Existing mould contamination.

Moisture control can help limit conditions that favour mould, but it does not clean contaminated materials or repair a building defect. Extensive or recurring mould, flood damage and concealed dampness warrant appropriate professional assessment.

In warm weather, an existing air conditioner’s supported dry mode may meet a modest need. Compare that option before buying another appliance, especially when you also want cooling.

Safe setup and maintenance

  1. Read the exact model’s manual, including refrigerant and room-size warnings.
  2. Keep the unit upright on a firm, level surface.
  3. Leave the specified clearance around all air openings.
  4. Use a suitable power connection and keep plugs and hands dry.
  5. Do not place it in a wet bathroom or near a bath or shower unless the instructions expressly permit that installation.
  6. Secure drainage and check the first run for leaks.
  7. Clean the tank and filter at the intervals in the manual.
  8. Use the appliance’s power button and allow any required desiccant cool-down cycle to finish.
  9. After transporting a compressor unit, follow its stated upright waiting period before switching on.

Collected water is not drinking water. Stop using a damaged or malfunctioning appliance and follow the manufacturer’s service process.

Common buying mistakes

  • Comparing unmatched ratings: 10L at cooler conditions is not directly comparable with 35L in hot, humid air.
  • Ignoring temperature: select for the room you actually need to dry.
  • Overestimating coverage: closed doors and a difficult layout restrict a portable unit’s reach.
  • Forgetting drainage: a full tank stops useful collection.
  • Buying for Wi-Fi first: connected controls cannot overcome insufficient extraction.
  • Assuming a long warranty is automatic: check registration conditions and retain proof.
  • Using continuous mode permanently: reassess settings once the initial moisture load is reduced.

Frequently asked questions

Which dehumidifier would we buy?

For a larger warm or heated room, the Ausclimate ACD135 is our starting point, subject to confirming dispatch and the tank specification. For an unheated winter room, choose the Ionmax Vienne ION630. For a compact warm room with connected controls, consider the Breville LAD208.

Can one portable unit dry the whole house?

It works most predictably in a contained area. Open doors may allow some moisture movement, but a multi-room result depends on airflow, layout and the moisture sources. Do not treat a maximum room-area claim as whole-house coverage.

Should windows be closed while it runs?

For drying a selected room, close external windows and doors so the appliance is not continually treating incoming humid air. Ventilate separately when outdoor conditions and the building’s needs make it appropriate.

Will it heat the room?

Yes. A portable dehumidifier releases heat indoors. Desiccant models commonly add more noticeable warmth, which may be useful in winter and undesirable in summer.

Is a dehumidifier also an air purifier?

Its primary job is water removal. A basic filter protects the appliance; additional particle filters offer a separate function. Compare clean air delivery performance if particle removal is your main goal.

Why has collection stopped?

Check the target humidity, room temperature, full-tank indicator, tank seating, filter and defrost behaviour. Use the troubleshooting instructions before assuming a fault.

Is the cheapest option good enough?

The Kmart unit may suit a small room when manual control is acceptable. For more precise automatic humidity management, the adjustable controls on the leading picks are a practical benefit.

Our final recommendation

Choose the Ausclimate ACD135 for a larger warm or heated room. Its capacity, automatic humidity control and drainage make a useful combination at the listed price. Confirm the conflicting tank and dispatch information before ordering, and register for the warranty extension.

Choose the Ionmax Vienne ION630 for cold rooms and the Breville Smart Dry Connect LAD208 for compact warm spaces. Consider the Mitsubishi for a premium requirement, De’Longhi for its combined features, or Kmart when a low initial cost outweighs automatic control.

Spend according to the room’s conditions and the source of dampness. A well-chosen appliance can help manage airborne moisture, but repairing leaks and improving inadequate extraction remain essential.
