Our top three sleep trackers
Before buying: check fit, phone compatibility, membership costs and the exact size selected. Retailer buttons open the named store.

Oura Ring 5
Our choice for buyers who want a discreet ring and detailed sleep insights, and accept the ongoing membership. Choose Garmin for an upper-arm option or Fitbit to spend less.
The best sleep tracker is one you can comfortably wear and use without becoming preoccupied with its scores. Our Australian shortlist offers three distinct choices: a premium ring, an overnight armband and a lower-cost wrist tracker.
Choose Oura Ring 5 for dedicated sleep insights, Garmin Index Sleep Monitor for Garmin integration, or Fitbit Inspire 3 for value. If your existing watch already tracks sleep comfortably, try that first before buying another device.
Compare the three options
| Model and checked price | Wear style | Manufacturer battery claim | Ongoing cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oura Ring 5 — $648 | Ring | 6–9 days | Membership for detailed insights |
| Garmin Index Sleep Monitor — $249 | Upper-arm band | Up to 7 nights with Pulse Ox | Core tracking without a separate subscription |
| Fitbit Inspire 3 — $167 | Wrist band | Up to 10 days | Core sleep tracking; optional paid extras |
All prices are Australian dollars. Battery figures are manufacturer claims, not results from our own testing; settings, wear and battery age affect endurance. The Oura price is for one Silver size, not a promise that every finish or size costs the same.
How we chose
This is a research-based comparison of official specifications, purchase listings, membership conditions and published sleep-tracking research. We have not worn these devices in a comparative trial or tested them against a sleep laboratory. “Best” describes our buying recommendation for the stated use case, not a measured accuracy ranking.
We retained Oura and Garmin from the original shortlist and added Fitbit because it provides a meaningfully cheaper route. Amazon Australia and eBay Australia were checked first; suitable exact-product listings could not be verified, so the buttons use Australian official or established retailer listings.
Oura Ring 5

A premium ring for people who will use the detail.
Checked listing: $648 AUD. Silver; checked listing is size 11.
Oura makes sense when a screen-free ring is easier for you to live with than a band. It brings overnight measurements and sleep, activity and readiness information together in one app. Its sensors include movement, optical heart-rate sensing and temperature sensing; the resulting sleep stages remain estimates.
The advertised battery range is 6–9 days, with charging taking about 80 minutes. Treat those figures as planning guidance. Regular charging opportunities matter more than reaching the maximum number.
The largest buying compromise is the membership. New members receive one included month; detailed insights then require a paid plan. Oura’s current support page directs Australian buyers to its Membership Hub for regional pricing. We have not substituted a US fee or an older Australian figure. Without membership, access is largely limited to the three daily scores and basic information, although data export remains available.
Fit first: the linked Silver listing is size 11, not a recommended size for everyone. Use the Ring 5 sizing process and confirm your size before ordering. A ring is also a poor match for work where jewellery must be removed; follow workplace rules and assess whether overnight-only wear meets your needs.
Reasons to choose it
- Screen-free format may suit people who dislike a watch in bed.
- Multi-day claimed battery life.
- Detailed insights for buyers willing to fund the service.
What to consider
- High hardware cost plus membership.
- Sizing and finger swelling need consideration.
- A ring may conflict with manual work or equipment rules.
Best for: Someone who values the ring format and will regularly use the paid detail.
Garmin Index Sleep Monitor

The strongest fit for an existing Garmin routine.
Checked listing: $249 AUD. Black, L/XL; 010-03024-00.
The Index Sleep Monitor frees your wrist and fingers while adding overnight information to Garmin Connect. It is particularly appealing if you already wear a Garmin watch during the day but prefer to remove it at bedtime.
Garmin lists sleep stages, HRV status, skin-temperature trends, breathing variations and Pulse Ox among its overnight measurements. It can contribute to Body Battery, with compatible daytime watch data providing a fuller picture. A smart wake alarm is also included.
Battery life is rated at up to seven nights with continuous Pulse Ox tracking. The removable module allows the fabric band to be washed according to the care instructions. Core sleep tracking does not require a separate paid sleep subscription; optional Garmin services should not be confused with a requirement to use the band.
The pictured and linked version is Black L/XL, part 010-03024-00. Garmin also offers S/M. Measure your arm using its sizing guidance; do not choose L/XL solely because that is the photographed version.
Reasons to choose it
- Leaves wrists and fingers free.
- Useful alongside a compatible Garmin daytime watch.
- No separate subscription needed for core sleep data.
What to consider
- A specialised purchase with limited daytime utility.
- The band may still feel noticeable in bed.
- Less compelling if you do not want to use Garmin Connect.
Best for: Existing Garmin users who want overnight tracking without wearing their watch.
Fitbit Inspire 3

Start with a lower-cost tracker before committing to a ring.
Checked listing: $167 AUD. Midnight Zen/Black; sold by Officeworks on Kmart.
Fitbit Inspire 3 is our budget choice because it combines sleep information with everyday activity tracking for much less than the checked Oura price. The Midnight Zen/Black version is sold by Officeworks through the linked Kmart marketplace listing.
Google lists automatic sleep tracking, light/deep/REM estimates, a Sleep Score and a vibrating Smart Wake alarm. Its battery claim is up to ten days; the always-on display and additional monitoring can reduce that. Sleep mode can mute notifications and turn off the display.
Core sleep tracking is distinct from the optional premium service. Google’s current Australian page uses Google Health and Google Health Premium wording. Older retailer pages may still describe different app names or trial periods, so confirm current terms during setup rather than buying for an old promotional offer.
Choose it if a slim wrist band is comfortable enough and your main aim is to understand habits. The saving is less useful if you already own a comfortable tracker with similar functions.
Reasons to choose it
- Lowest checked hardware price of the three.
- Sleep and activity functions in one device.
- Core sleep features do not depend on buying every premium extra.
What to consider
- Still requires wearing a wrist band.
- Some additional reports and coaching require payment.
- App compatibility and trial terms need checking.
Best for: First-time buyers who want useful sleep trends at a lower upfront cost.
What the data can—and cannot—tell you
Wearables infer sleep from indirect signals such as movement and pulse patterns. Clinical polysomnography uses additional physiological measurements, including brain activity, to assess sleep. This is why a colourful sleep-stage chart should not be read as a medical result.
A 2025 study comparing six wrist-worn trackers with polysomnography found stronger detection of sleep than wakefulness, with only fair-to-moderate overall agreement. It did not test the three exact products in this shortlist. We use it to explain general limitations, not to claim that it validates Ring 5, Index Sleep Monitor or Inspire 3.
Use repeated patterns as a prompt to reflect on your routine. Avoid drawing a conclusion from one low score, comparing scores between brands, or treating a particular number of deep-sleep minutes as a target.
Choose the format you will actually wear
| Format | Useful when | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Ring | You prefer a screen-free device | Sizing, swelling, jewellery rules and membership |
| Upper-arm band | Your wrist and fingers need to stay free | Arm circumference, fabric comfort and app ecosystem |
| Wrist tracker | You want sleep and daytime activity at lower cost | Overnight comfort, display settings and charging |
| Existing smartwatch | You already own a comfortable compatible watch | Try its sleep features before buying another device |
Calculate the ongoing cost
Compare hardware, membership and accessories over the period you expect to use the device. For Oura, obtain the current Australian membership quote before paying for the ring. For the other two, start by asking whether the included functions meet your needs before adding an optional service.
Read the cancellation and data-export terms as well. A purchase may be poor value if the information you wanted becomes inaccessible when you stop paying.
A useful routine for the first few weeks
- Set up fit and charging. Follow the device instructions and choose a regular charging window outside your main sleep.
- Record how you feel. Briefly note bedtime, waking time and whether you feel rested.
- Look for recurring patterns. Compare your own nights over several weeks rather than competing with someone else’s score.
- Change one habit at a time. This makes your observations easier to interpret, although it does not prove cause and effect.
- Keep symptoms separate from scores. Seek advice when symptoms persist, even if the app looks reassuring.
What about shift work and daytime sleep?
If your main sleep occurs during the day, check how the device and current app handle sleep schedules, naps and split sleep. We have not validated these three products for rotating shifts. Do not assume that a long overnight battery claim proves reliable tracking of every daytime sleep pattern.
Before buying, ask support about your actual routine and check return conditions. A tracker that repeatedly misses your main sleep is poor value, however detailed its dashboard appears.
When to speak with a doctor
Healthdirect lists breathing pauses, snoring with gasping or choking, and daytime sleepiness among possible signs of obstructive sleep apnoea. Persistent unrefreshing sleep or difficulty sleeping also deserves assessment. Do not wait for a wearable alert before raising symptoms with a GP.
If sleepiness makes driving or operating machinery unsafe, stop the activity and seek appropriate help. A tracker cannot establish that you are safe to drive. Clinical assessment and, where appropriate, a sleep study address questions these buying recommendations cannot answer.
Comfort, privacy and ownership checks
- Comfort: stop wearing a device that causes pain, persistent irritation, numbness or swelling. Follow fit and care instructions.
- Compatibility: confirm your phone, operating system and account requirements before ordering.
- Privacy: review permissions, optional health-service sharing, export and account-deletion options.
- Security: use a unique password and additional sign-in protection where available.
- Ownership: check the supplied charger, replacement accessories and Australian support arrangements.
- Returns: confirm the policy for an opened or worn product; do not assume a comfort trial is included.
When tracking becomes unhelpful
A sleep score should help you make a decision, not dominate your morning. If checking it increases worry, try reviewing less often or taking a break. Feeling unwell deserves attention; feeling well does not need to be overridden by an isolated app score. Discuss persistent sleep-related worry with a health professional.
Frequently asked questions
Which sleep tracker is best without a subscription?
Garmin is the strongest option here for an existing Garmin user who wants an overnight armband. Fitbit is the cheaper route to core sleep tracking. Check which optional extras are paid before choosing.
Is Oura worth paying more for?
It can be if you prefer the ring format and will use the detailed service consistently. It is harder to justify if your existing wearable is comfortable and already answers your questions.
Are rings more accurate than watches?
Not automatically. Fit, sensors, algorithms and the measurement being assessed all matter. We have not established an accuracy winner among these three exact models.
Can these trackers diagnose sleep apnoea?
Do not use their wellness scores to diagnose or rule it out. Take symptoms and any useful records to a clinician, who can decide whether further assessment is needed.
Can I use the Oura ring without paying?
Basic daily scores remain available, but the detailed experience is membership-dependent. Confirm current terms before buying specifically for a particular report.
Should I replace a smartwatch I already own?
Try its existing sleep features first. A new device is easier to justify when comfort, charging or missing information creates a clear problem.
Will a tracker improve my sleep?
Not on its own. Its value is helping you notice patterns and decide what to investigate or change. More measurements do not necessarily lead to better decisions.
Our final recommendation
Oura Ring 5 is our overall dedicated sleep-tracking pick for buyers who accept the membership. Choose Garmin Index Sleep Monitor to complement an existing Garmin routine, or Fitbit Inspire 3 for a more affordable first purchase.
Comfort and usefulness come first. Keep a device you already own if it meets your needs, and let symptoms—not an app score—guide the decision to seek medical advice.
