Our three washing machine picks
Measure first: cabinet depth is not installed depth. Allow for the closed door, hoses, required clearances and access to load the drum.

LG WV9-1610W
A balanced starting point for a family that needs a 10kg front loader. Compare its delivered price and installation requirements before paying more for premium cycle features.
The LG WV9-1610W is our best overall washing machine in this researched shortlist. Choose the Hisense HWF5I9014 when keeping the purchase price down matters most, or compare the Bosch WGB25601AU if its fabric-care options suit your routine.
All three main picks are front loaders. A machine that fits your laundry and is comfortable to load matters more than its position in a ranking. Below, we also discuss larger capacity, shallow spaces and upright loading.
Compare the main picks
| Model | Capacity / spin | Published size: W × H × D | Listed price |
|---|---|---|---|
| LG WV9-1610W | 10kg / 1600rpm | 600 × 850 × 565mm cabinet; 620mm with door closed | $1,299 — LG Australia |
| Hisense HWF5I9014 | 9kg / 1400rpm | 595 × 845 × 550mm | $849 — Hisense Australia |
| Bosch WGB25601AU | 10kg / 1600rpm | 598 × 845 × 590mm | $1,899 — Harvey Norman clearance |
Prices are in Australian dollars before any delivery, installation or removal charges. Local stock and delivery eligibility require a postcode check. Published dimensions use each manufacturer’s conventions and exclude any additional installation space unless stated.
How we chose
We compared Australian manufacturer specifications, listed selling prices, capacity, installation dimensions and useful programs. We have not conducted laboratory wash tests, measured noise or assessed long-term reliability of these exact machines. These are research-based recommendations, not hands-on test results.
The previous LG WV5-1410W has been replaced here because we could not verify suitable new stock: Winnings listed it as unavailable and the stock located elsewhere was factory seconds. That does not establish that every remaining unit is discontinued or unavailable.
Amazon Australia and eBay Australia were checked first, but we could not verify suitable available exact-model marketplace listings for the final three. The buttons therefore use the manufacturer stores and a national Australian retailer.
The three main recommendations
LG WV9-1610W

Family capacity and useful fast-wash options.
LG lists TurboClean 360, Steam+ and ThinQ connectivity. Its advertised 39-minute wash is for a 5kg load under the stated test conditions—not the full drum. It does not have ezDispense automatic detergent dosing.
The published water consumption is 72 litres on the rated program. Its 565mm cabinet becomes 620mm with the door closed, and LG lists 1100mm with the door open at 90 degrees. Rear hose clearance is still additional.
Our reason for choosing it is the combination at its listed price, rather than proof it cleans better than every competitor. The Bosch also offers 1600rpm and five-star energy and water ratings, so compare the remaining features carefully.
Strengths
- Useful capacity for a busy washing week.
- Fast half-load option alongside regular programs.
Drawbacks
- Check the complete installed depth.
- No automatic dosing; quick cycles have load limits.
Hisense HWF5I9014

A lower-priced 9kg family option.
The Hisense is the lowest-priced main pick. Its Automix dispenser mixes detergent with water; it is not a bulk detergent tank that doses multiple washes automatically. Published features include a 49-minute half-load wash, a small-load 15-minute cycle and ConnectLife functions.
The model-specific Australian specification sheet lists 4.5-star energy and water ratings, 256kWh annual labelled energy use and 77 litres per rated wash. We use that sheet because the webpage contains a conflicting energy figure. Confirm the supplied label before purchase.
At the checked prices, it is $450 below the LG. That is a meaningful saving if 9kg meets your needs. It is not evidence of equivalent cleaning, noise or lifetime durability; we have not measured those outcomes.
Strengths
- Lowest purchase price of the three.
- Useful capacity without a large cabinet.
Drawbacks
- Confirm the supplied energy label matches the specification sheet.
- Quick programs are not full-load substitutes.
Bosch WGB25601AU

Fabric-care features at a higher price.
Bosch lists five-star energy and water ratings, a reload function, Hygiene Plus, Iron Assist and a Mini Load program. These features may suit a household that regularly separates garments by care requirements.
Harvey Norman’s listing was marked clearance at $1,899; Bosch displayed $1,999. Confirm local stock, delivery and the complete model number. Similar Bosch names do not guarantee identical features.
The LG already matches its stated maximum spin and star ratings. Our premium recommendation is therefore conditional: pay the extra only if you prefer the controls and programs or obtain a compelling quote. We have not established a superior wash result or longer lifespan for this model.
Strengths
- Fabric-care and small-load options.
- Reload function for suitable conditions.
Drawbacks
- Higher price than the other main picks.
- Clearance availability may vary by location.
When a different machine makes more sense
Larger loads: Fisher & Paykel WH1160P3
This 11kg model remains a conditional alternative for bulky laundry. Fisher & Paykel lists it as an outgoing model, with a $1,249 price and postcode-dependent stock checking. Its stated dimensions are 600 × 850 × 675mm, so depth is the first practical hurdle.
The manufacturer lists 1400rpm, 4.5-star energy and water ratings, 94 litres per rated cycle and Steam Refresh. Check remaining new stock and the current replacement range before committing. A large drum still needs to suit the bedding manufacturer’s care instructions.

Shallow spaces: LG WV5-1208W
The original shortlist included this 8kg, 1200rpm machine for its 475mm cabinet depth. Its manufacturer page remains available, but we have not verified current new retail stock for this update. Treat it as a model to investigate, not a guaranteed available recommendation. Confirm total closed-door depth and hose clearance before designing cabinetry around it.

Upright loading: LG WTL5-10W
A top loader may be easier to use when bending is difficult, but reaching the bottom of a deep tub can create a different problem. Try the loading position in person. The original shortlist’s LG WTL5-10W is a 10kg option with a manufacturer information page; we have not verified local new stock or a current selling price here.
Do not substitute a top loader into a front-loader recess without measuring its width and open-lid height. Confirm plumbing requirements and dryer placement separately.

Choose capacity around your real washing
Capacity describes the dry laundry load permitted on the relevant program. Delicates, wool, quick and steam programs may allow much less. A 10kg badge is not permission to put 10kg into every cycle.
As a starting point, smaller households can compare 7–8kg machines, while households with regular towels, uniforms and bedding may appreciate 9–10kg. Consider 11kg or more when your actual loads justify the extra size. Household headcount alone is a poor guide: work clothes, sport, children and washing frequency all change the requirement.
Weigh a typical dry load and list the largest items you wash. Then check the manual’s limits for those items. A quilt’s bulk and care label matter as well as its weight; do not force it into a drum simply because its dry weight is below the maximum.
Front loader or top loader?
CHOICE’s buying guidance explains that front loaders generally use less water, treat clothes more gently and spin faster, although normal cycles can take longer. Top loaders can offer easier upright access and shorter cycles, with different water-use and space compromises.
| Consideration | Front loader | Top loader |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Requires bending unless an approved pedestal suits the installation | Upright loading; check reach to the tub bottom |
| Space | Check forward door swing and rear connections | Check open-lid height and overhead obstructions |
| Dryer placement | Stack only with an approved compatible system | Cannot carry a dryer on its opening lid |
| Buying priority | Balance efficiency, cycle limits and access | Balance physical access, footprint and water use |
If mobility is the deciding factor, test the controls and loading position before choosing a model. The most efficient machine on paper is not a practical choice if you cannot use it comfortably.
Read energy labels beyond the stars
Compare machines of similar capacity and inspect the stated electricity consumption as well as the star rating. The Energy Rating label is based on specified testing, not every program you will run. Water labels similarly describe use on the rated program. Load size, temperature and cycle selection change real-world consumption.
A simple electricity comparison is the difference in labelled annual kilowatt-hours multiplied by your electricity tariff. For example, a hypothetical difference of 50kWh at 35 cents per kWh is $17.50 a year. This illustration is not a measured saving between these machines, and it does not include water or drying costs.
Do not assume that an expensive washer repays its premium through efficiency. Compare actual consumption figures, your tariff and your likely use. The LG and Bosch share the same headline star ratings here, but equal stars do not establish identical consumption or washing results.
Which features deserve your money?
A quick program you can actually use
Ask how much laundry the advertised fast cycle accepts and what level of soiling it is intended for. A short refresh is a different job from washing a full basket of towels. Compare the program you expect to use most often, including its load and temperature restrictions.
Spin speed with fabric control
A faster final spin can reduce the moisture left for drying, but maximum rpm is not a complete measure of spin performance. Follow garment care instructions and choose lower speeds where appropriate. Both our LG and Bosch picks reach 1600rpm, so the Bosch is not an upgrade on this number alone.
Detergent handling
Automatic dosing can reduce daily measuring, but it has reservoirs and settings to maintain. A dispenser that premixes detergent is different. Read the exact model’s manual rather than assuming that a dispenser name means weeks of unattended dosing.
Controls and notifications
Check whether the display is readable from your normal position and whether you can select your usual wash without an app. Remote monitoring is a convenience, not evidence of better cleaning. Decide what problem a connected feature solves before paying for it.
Steam and refresh programs
Look at the garments, load limits and programs covered by the claim. A refresh setting does not necessarily remove dirt like a normal wash, and a steam feature does not make every fabric suitable for heat. Avoid buying on an unqualified hygiene promise.
Measure the complete installation
- Measure recess width, height and depth at several points.
- Use the exact model’s installation guide to add required clearances.
- Allow for door projection, hoses, fittings and the power plug.
- Check the door or lid can open and that you can reach the controls.
- Measure the entire delivery route, including tight turns and stairs.
- Confirm water inlets, drainage and electrical requirements with the installer.
- If stacking, obtain the approved kit for the exact washer and dryer combination.
- Arrange installation on a suitable level surface and removal of transport restraints according to the manual.
For the LG winner: use its 620mm closed-door depth as the starting point, not its 565mm cabinet figure. Neither includes every possible hose arrangement or the clearances required by your installation.
Compare the delivered cost
Put each quote on the same basis. Include freight, stairs or difficult access, installation, removal of the old machine, accessories and any stacking kit. A lower advertised price can become a higher final bill.
Check whether the item is new, factory seconds, refurbished or an ex-display unit. Those are different offers. Ask what cosmetic damage, missing accessories or warranty conditions apply and keep a copy of the listing. We have not treated factory-seconds pricing as equivalent to new stock in the main comparison.
Warranty and consumer guarantees
A long motor warranty is not necessarily a long whole-machine warranty. Read the parts, labour, travel and registration conditions. Keep the receipt, model number and serial number.
The ACCC explains that consumer guarantees apply automatically. A written warranty does not replace those rights, and its expiry does not automatically end every right to a remedy. The appropriate remedy depends on the problem and circumstances. Contact the retailer with clear evidence if an appliance fails.
Frequently asked questions
Which washing machine would we buy?
For a family needing a front loader, we would start with the LG WV9-1610W and check the complete delivered price and fit. The Hisense is the lower-cost alternative. Choose the Bosch only when its particular features or offer justify the premium for you.
Is an 8kg washer enough for four people?
It may be if you wash frequently and your bulky items fit within the program limits. Measure actual loads before deciding. More capacity is useful when it solves a recurring problem, rather than simply making the specification look better.
Is Bosch more efficient than the LG winner?
Both have published five-star energy and water ratings. That alone cannot establish which is cheaper to run in your home. Compare consumption on the labels and the programs you will actually use.
Does the Hisense automatically dose detergent?
Its Automix feature premixes detergent with water. Do not mistake that for a bulk auto-dosing reservoir. Check the exact dispenser instructions before buying if automatic dosing is essential.
Which energy rating applies to the Hisense?
The model-specific Australian specification sheet lists 4.5 stars. Its webpage contains a conflicting figure, so confirm the label on the supplied HWF5I9014 before purchase.
Can I stack any dryer on a front loader?
No. Confirm the exact appliance pairing, stacking kit and installation requirements with the manufacturers. Similar width alone does not establish a safe or approved combination.
Are these recommendations based on hands-on testing?
No. They are based on specifications, pricing and published guidance. We have not measured cleaning performance, noise or reliability, and do not claim these are laboratory winners.
Should I pay for an extended warranty?
Compare the actual extra protection with its price, exclusions and claims process, alongside the manufacturer warranty and your consumer guarantees. Do not assume an extra plan is required for every remedy after the written warranty expires.
Our verdict
Start with the LG WV9-1610W for a balanced family front loader, choose the Hisense HWF5I9014 for a lower purchase price, and compare the Bosch WGB25601AU for its particular fabric-care features.
Measure the complete footprint, check the programs you will use and compare delivered costs. If loading access or available space rules out the winner, prioritise a machine that works in your home.
